Description

Black (urushi) and gilt lacquered wood
Rectangular box-form body, with flat faces and vertical sides, semi-cylindrical hinged lid, with interior metal supporting chain
Front with two locks, cut-out and engraved escutcheons, metal corner reinforcements, bordering mounts, and sides with yellow metal lateral handles
Exterior decorated with branches, foliage, flowers, and small foliage motifs in gilt, with mother-of-pearl inlay (raden)
Black lacquered interior, the inner face of the lid decorated with gilt branches and mother-of-pearl inlay, plain interior box without divisions
Japan, Momoyama period (1573–1615)
