Natalia Nesterova (Moscow, 1944–2022) developed an independent pictorial practice from the 1970s, outside the official structures of the Soviet art system. Her career coincides with the period of opening and internationalisation of Soviet art, particularly from the late 1980s onwards.
Characterised by grotesque figures and a sustained tension between irony and drama, her work is associated with a generation of artists whose critical and institutional recognition developed largely outside the Soviet Union.
