Additional Information

As a pioneer of Conceptual Art in Portugal, Alberto Carneiro opened
new paths for artistic practice. In his oeuvre he has developed an
important association between art and nature, constantly searching for
the primordial relation between body, nature and art.
The art of Alberto Carneiro is about his life experience, and singular
contact with nature. These experiences are fundamental for his
reinvention of nature. He is not interested in a copy of nature. Not even
its representation. The process that gave birth to Água e fogo [Water and
Fire], 2003 started with a careful choice of the trunks. The sculptor then
removes what is left over, in a search that summons the Zen philosophy
and reinvents the codes of landscape.
His recent exhibitions include: ‘Árvores, flores e frutos do meu jardim:
Desenhos e esculturas’, Fundação Carmona e Costa, Lisbon (2015);
‘Alberto Carneiro: Esculturas e desenhos’, Fábrica de Santo Thyrso, Santo
Tirso, Portugal (2015); ‘Alberto Carneiro: Mandala do tempo sobre os
quatro elementos’, Travessa da Ermida, Lisboa (2014); ‘Alberto Carneiro:
Arte vida / Vida arte’, Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Serralves, Porto,
Portugal (2013); and ‘Alberto Carneiro: Os caminhos da água e do corpo
sobre a terra’, Centro de Arte Contemporânea de Bragança, Bragança,
Portugal (2012).
