The chased gilt-bronze mounts with two tall handles formed as scaled serpents, following the body of the vases from the base, rising above the rim and coiling around the neck

Note:

Édouard Chappey (1858-1907) was a major Parisian collector of decorative arts, whose collection was dispersed at the Galerie Georges Petit, Paris, in March 1907. The sale included early European and Chinese porcelain, jades, rock crystals, objets de vitrine, bronzes, clocks, furniture, tapestries and prints.

The present pair corresponds to lot 269 in the sale of the Collection Édouard Chappey, Galerie Georges Petit, Paris, 11-15 March 1907, described in the catalogue as:

'269 - Deux petits vases en ancienne porcelaine de Chine, époque Kien-Lung, à décor de fleurs sur fond bleu pâle, gravé sous couverte. Monture en bronze doré à anses serpents.'

The copy of the catalogue consulted bears the handwritten annotation '700' next to the lot description, probably corresponding to the hammer price in francs.

The printed label 'COLLECTION ED. CHAPPEY' confirms the Chappey provenance, while the numbered leather label '465' most likely corresponds to an inventory or collection number, distinct from the lot number of the 1907 sale.
