Additional Information

Some scholars identify this armorial as belonging to the Marini family, a wealthy Italian family of merchant shippers. According to David Howard and John Ayers, this armorial shield is recorded in the book plates of Pietro Marini de Barnabita, an illustrious member of the Marini family who lived in the mid 18th century. These authors also refer that although it is possible to identify Portuguese families with the salient and banded bull crest, no shield is known with both parts simultaneously, hence being impossible for those authors to match these features to a Portuguese family. Nuno de Castro, however, points out to a pillory at Atouguia da Baleia, whose elevations feature the Ataíde heraldic and a bull, hence arguing that a set of this dimension could have been used by direct relatives of Luís Peregrino de Ataíde
