China, Qing Dynasty, 19th/20th century

Of spinach-green jade with darker inclusions, the rim and foot mounted in celadon-white jade

Of tall cylindrical form

Finely carved and reticulated in high relief with a continuous mountainous landscape of pavilions, pine trees and cascading waterfalls, animated by scholars strolling along winding paths followed by young attendants

The interior fitted with a gilt-bronze holder with relief decoration, designed to support incense sticks

(minor loss to the base)

Note:

The xiangtong, or incense holder, first appeared during the Song Dynasty and reached its peak during the Ming and Qing periods, following the widespread use of stick incense. The perfumed smoke is released through the openwork carving, creating an ethereal effect.
