Additional Information

Jacques Dubois (Pontoise, 1694 – Paris, 1763), maître in 1742, was one of the most distinguished ébénistes of the Louis XV period, renowned for his specialization in working with Oriental lacquer panels (from China and Japan) integrated into furniture produced in Parisian workshops and enriched with high-quality gilt bronze mounts. The posthumous inventory of his atelier documents a significant volume of lacquered pieces and an extensive stock of bronze models, attesting to consistent and controlled production in this domain. The present secretaire à abattant, through its combination of Chinese lacquer panels with vernis Martin, the quality and character of its chiseled gilt bronze mounts, and its chronology (mid-18th century), falls within the scope of Dubois's production and that of the restricted group of Parisian ébénistes who, during this period, mastered the art of mounting Oriental lacquer on luxury furniture.
