\r\ncentrury are today highly prized of its historic importance as evidence of the first
\r\nbusiness interactions between Japan and the West.
\r\nApproximately 100 examples are known today, kept both at museums and
\r\nprivate collections.
\r\nThe screens were commonly made in pairs depicting different phases of the
\r\nsame story. Usually composed of six folding panels, screens of four and two
\r\npanels are also known, as is the one now offered for sale.
\r\nThe story here depicted is one of the most recurring themes - the arrival of
\r\nthe \u0093Nau do Trato\u0094, also known as \u0093Nau Negra\u0094 (Black Ship) ou \u0093Kurofune\u0094, to
\r\nNagasaki harbour. The ship, which came from China or India, carried silks, highly
\r\nregarded by the Japanese.
\r\nThe work now offered for sale, similar to the one shown in the collection of the
\r\nBoston Museum of Fine Arts, is a two-fold screen illustrating at the centre the
\r\nBlack Ship and highlighting the interactions of the crew, depicted - as usual for
\r\nthe Namban-jin representations (Barbarians of the South, as all Europeans were
\r\ncalled) - with large noses, beard, mustache and baggy pants. In this screen, a
\r\nportion of the harbour is also depicted where two Namban-jin are receiving
\r\ngoods from a smaller boat.
\r\nThe screen that is believed to be the pair of the one in our sale - kept in a
\r\nPortuguese private collection and exhibited, among others, in 1989 Europalia - is
\r\nalso attributed to the second half of the 17th century and depicts a similar ship
