\n(one dish with chips and the other restored)","additional_info":[{"title":"Additional Information","text":"The central scene is interpreted as depicting the wedding of the lovers Daphnis and Chloe, and was likely inspired by an engraving by Beno\u00eet Audran (1661-1721), based on a painting by Philippe d'Orl\u00e9ans (1674-1723), published in Amours pastorales de Daphnis et Chlo\u00e9, Book Four, Paris, 1718. The story, of Greek origin, is attributed to Longus, a 2nd century AD author, and narrates the pastoral idyll and union of the young lovers.
\nAn identical example to these dishes is in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago (inv. 1958.244).
\nOther pieces with the same central composition but different decoration and without armorial designs are also known, such as a plate in the Rijksmuseum (inv. AK-NM-13516).
