According to the Gospel of Saint John, Lazarus sisters, Martha and Mary, informed Jesus that their brother was sick saying: \u201cLord, the one You love is sick\u201d (John, 11:3). Nonetheless, when Jesus gets to Bethany, Lazarus had been dead for four days, in a cave locked by a stone. Jesus orders that the stone be removed and thanks God The Father for hearing Him, so that all present could witness the miracle that ensued. Suddenly Lazarus raises, tied hands and feet with his face covered by a shroud and Jesus askes that the ligatures be removed so that he can walk. The scene is represented in a manner distinct from the other two paintings, given that the figures are worked in greater detail and larger in size. There are similarities between the characters depicted, such as is the case with the female figures of Martha and Mary, whose faces are like Francken\u2019s stereotyped faces that were mentioned earlier in the text.
