Rathenau assembled a remarkable painting collection with works of the 18th and 19th century as well as contemporary artists in Schloss Freienwalde, a palace that he acquired in 1909 as his summer resort. <br \/>\nIn 1922 after the Rapallo Treaty with the Soviet Union - in which both sides renounced its territorial and financial claims established at the Brest-Litovsk Treaty \u2013 Rathenau is assassinated by two ultra nationalist \u201cOrganization Consul\u201d officials.
