Adriano Sousa Lopes participated in the First World War atthe Flanders front and was appointed by the Portuguese Republic as oficial artist of the Corpo Expedicionário Português after a letter written by him to the War Minister stating: "I dare to ask of your excellency the honor of granting me an honorific position at the Corpo Expedicionário Português entrusting me the task of artistically document Portugal's participation in the European War"
Of this participation resulted a series of drawings and small panels depicting war scenes, soldiers, etc, of which this panel offered for auction is part.
