Additional Information

The objects, paintings and films of Noronha da Costa reflect a
thorough research into the relation between reality and the space of
representation, between the real image and the projected image. In this
painting the artist confronts us with what, at first sight, is an abstract
blue monochrome, to then discover another element — a group of
seagulls — which intensifies the relation between figuration and
abstraction.
Of his most recent solo exhibitions we can single out: ‘Luís Noronha
da Costa’, Palácio Anjos, Algés, Portugal (2013); ‘La imagem elegante’,
Fundação Arpad Szenes – Vieira da Silva, Lisbon (2011); ‘Piero della
Francesca revisitado’, SNBA, Lisbon (2005); and ‘Noronha da Costa
revisitado: 1965–83’, Centro Cultural de Belém, Lisbon (2003). Noronha
da Costa represented Portugal at the 10th São Paulo Biennale (1969) and
at the 34th Venice Biennale (1970). In 1999 he was awarded the European
Prize for Painting by the European Parliament and received the AICA
Award.
