Additional Information

Founding member of the Puzzle group and cofounder, with Albuquerque
Mendes, of the Espaço Lusitano Association / Art Gallery, in Porto (active
1976–81), Gerardo Burmester emerged in the second half of the 1970s,
when he began to develop his performative actions and a pictorial
work that associates neo-romantic references with ironic views on the
condition of painting.
Games of visual seduction, of approximation to and distancing from
the observer, and the recurrent use of a particular range of materials
that includes veneered wood, polished aluminum and industrial felt
distinguish the objects and installations that Burmester created from
the end of the 1980s.
The rhythm of transparency and opacity and the confrontation of
colours, lines and geometries are the defining features of this untitled
work, composed of a set of rectangular Plexiglas elements. Expression
and narrative don’t have a place here.
