Additional Information

Exclusively a painter, José Loureiro has for the past two decades
examined the possibilities of painting in our time — in his words within
‘the strict tradition of painting’. His most recent work consists of pure
colours and elementary pictorial elements such as lines and stripes.
This large abstract painting has a very intense physical presence.
The several rectangles inside the larger rectangle can be seen as a
manifestation of the internal geometry of the canvas. The vertical and
horizontal lines should be understood as a reproduction of the material
properties of the canvas which is, above all, a rectangle of straight
lines and rectilinear angles. The lines are not necessarily straight or
absolutely defined.
The painting is at the same time precise and physical: the lines are
precise and allude to manual action. The artist never searches for an
impersonal and perfect quality in the application of the paint. Mobility,
vibrations and a large spectrum of pictorial effects are key features of
Loureiro’s paintings, situated at the frontier between geometry and
expressivity.
His last exhibitions include: ‘Inverno no Ártico’, Casa da Cerca, Almada,
Portugal (2012); ‘As piores flores: Desenho 1990–1996’, Culturgest,
Lisbon (2011); ‘Bosão de L, uma pintura’, Museu da Eletricidade, Lisbon
(2011); ‘Dois remos por remador’, Culturgest, Lisbon, (2011); and ‘José
Loureiro’, Porta 33, Funchal, Madeira, Portugal (2011).
