Additional Information

Júlio Pomar is one of the most prominent Portuguese artists. A painter,
sculptor and an important name in the decorative arts, he was also a
fundamental writer in the field of art criticism in Portugal. Along with
his artistic practice, his texts contributed to the definition of radical
artistic movements in the national panorama. In fact, from early on
Pomar stood out as the leading figure of the Portuguese neorealist
movement in painting, actively participating with both his canvases
and political activity in the anti-fascist movements of the time. After
abandoning this neorealist period, he gave gesture and colour free rein
in consecutive series that extend from the 1950s until the present. The
expression of the gesture, the development of the line, and the opening
of composition to a pictorial ‘informal’ language are the features that
characterized the subsequent periods.
Pomar’s most recent exhibitions include at Atelier-Museu Júlio Pomar,
in Lisbon, ‘Sem capricho ou presunção: O Fado por Júlio Pomar & Novas
Doações’ (2015); ‘Edição e utopia na obra gráfica de Júlio Pomar’ (2014);
‘Júlio Pomar: Tratado dos olhos’ (2014) and ‘Júlio Pomar: Em torno do
acervo’ (2013); and at Galeria Árvore, Porto, ‘Atirar a albarda ao ar’ (2012).
