Rare inkwell from the reign of William IV (1830–1837)
Silver, fineness .925
Asymmetrical, dynamic design with undulating forms evoking the movement of water. The edges are cut in free, flowing curves, and at one end, emerging from the waves and shells, is a figure of a Triton blowing a conch shell, with hair sculpted in motion to suggest wind or the action of the sea
The inkwell has a hinged lid, also shaped like a shell, and rests on three feet decorated in a matching style
London assay mark (1836), maker’s mark of Paul Storr (registered 1813), commercial mark “STORR & MORTIMER,” and numbered “116.”
