Additional Information

Dirk Stoop was Dutch painter and engraver that came to Portugal by invitation of king D. João IV. In 1662 he accompanied Catherine of Braganza in a voyage to London on occasion of her marriage to King Charles II of England (he produced seven engravings documenting the event, one of which with a similar view of Terreiro do Paço as the one depicted on the painting now being sold). Other works by the artist include one of the most important 17th century views of Terreiro do Paço, now in the collection of the Lisbon Museum.

Sold with a file of correspondence and copies of letters between Mr. Tarry (and his son's) with experts and others after Mr. Tarry and a photograph of this painting in Country Life Magazine, February 18, 1949.
