Additional Information

The panel depicts D. Jorge de Ataíde (ca.1535-1611) wearing richly decorated clothes and jewelry, mitre, croisier and galero in one hand wich is curious once D. Jorge never achieved the title of Cardinal.
Of unknown authorship this painting is attributed by Vitor Serrão to the proto-Mannerist period of the first half of the 17th century. This historian finds paralel characteristics with the panels produced by Simão Rodrigues and Domingos Vieira Serrão for the Carmo monastery in Coimbra, and believes that this panel might have be produced at the same school.
Important member of the society of his time D. Jorge was bishop of Viseu between 1569 and 1578, general inquisitor, minister of the royal chapel for the Cardinal King D. Henrique and Filipe I (Filipe II of Spain).
Was also patron of the Santo António da Castanheira convent in Vila Franca de Xira. This painting was commissioned for this convent that was patronized by the Ataíde family (Condes de Castanheira and lords of Póvoas and Cheleiros) in the 16th and 17th centuries. A funerary chapel was built here for D. Jorge de Ataíde.
