Description

An important chinese Lokapala Sancai
figure, Tang dynasty (618-907).
Green, Brown and yellow glazed terracotta.
The figure is standing on a lying buffalo
showing a powerfull and threatening pose
with left hand raised and clenched fist,
and right hand on the waist. Fierce face.
Restoration.
Height: 87cm

The results of Oxford Authentication Ltd., thermoluminescence test no. C199c67 is consistent with the dating of this lot.
Identical figure belonging to the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and illustrated by M. Medly in A Chinese Potter, New York, 1976, pp. 82, fig. 53.
