Additional Information

With a career of almost fifty years, Helena Almeida is one of the most
emblematic and reputable Portuguese artists. To move away from the
pictorial plane first in painting and drawing, and afterwards in video and
photography, was for some time one of her main concerns.
In her photographs, her body is always represented in poses related to
performative gestures witnessed only by her assistant — her husband,
the architect Artur Rosa. In Lavada em lágrimas [Washed in Tears], 2009
the artist explores a popular expression that characterized the female
condition and juxtaposes it with an image in which the only female
references are legs and feet — wearing shoes that are not associated
with any type of fragility or seduction — grounded on a soaked
pavement.
Several international exhibitions have reinforced awareness of the
importance of Helena Almeida’s work, both nationally and internationally.
The list of institutions that have organized solo exhibitions of her work
are Viana Art, New York, USA (2015); Museu de Arte Contemporânea
de Serralves, Porto (2015); touring to Jeu de Paume, Paris and WIELS,
Brussels, 2016); Kettle’s Yard, Cambridge, UK (2009); Fundación
Telefónica, Madrid (2009); The Drawing Centre, New York City (2004);
The Sydney Biennale, Australia (2004); and Centro Galego de Arte
Contemporánea, Santiago de Compostela, Spain (2000). Helena Almeida
represented Portugal at the Venice Biennale in 1982 and 2005.
