Additional Information

In the last two decades, the work of Jorge Queiroz, one of the most
singular of the Portuguese artistic milieu of his generation, has earned
large international acclaim. Shaped by a very particular view of the
world, his drawings, paintings and videos are based on the fantastic and
the grotesque. In Queiroz’ work drawing serves intriguing non-narrative
visual fictions, the figures and situations of which associate humour and
tragedy, familiar references and extraordinary narratives.
The Pavilhão Branco of the Museu da Cidade in Lisbon (‘O caso’, 2015);
gallery VW (Veneklasen/Werner), in Berlin (2013); Sikkema Jenkins
Gallery, New York (2013); the Fundação Carmona e Costa, in Lisbon
(‘Debaixo das pedras da calçada, a praia!’, 2012); Chiado 8 – Arte
Contemporânea, Lisbon (‘Donnerstag e outros desenhos’, 2007); the
Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Serralves, Porto (2007); and the
Horst-Janssen-Museum, Oldenburg, Germany are some of the exhibition
spaces that have presented the work of Jorge Queiroz in the last decade.
Queiroz also participated in some of the most reputable biennales
of contemporary art: the 4th Berlin Biennale (2006) the 26th São Paulo
Biennale (2004) and the 50th Venice Biennale (2003).
