Note
It was in 1883 that Josef Pallweber, an Austrian watchmaker living in Salzburg registered the patent of a mechanism that showed us time in a new way. The first digital watch was born.
Instead of a conventional way of showing us time (with two hands pointing to hours and minutes), this mechanism used three discs to tell us the hours and minutes through two windows in a dial (also known as Jumping Hours).
Pallweber granted the license of this creation to IWC and, between 1884 and 1890, the brand sold approximately 17,000 units.
We can say that the purpose of the brand and Pallweber was to make these watches unique heirlooms. These pieces of Art used cutting-edge technology for the time, while maintaining the traditions of a careful, hand-made production.
Returning now to 2018, the year of IWC's jubilee celebration, the brand decided to pay tribute to Pallweber by redesigning and developing a new mechanism to equip IWC's first and only mechanical digital wristwatch. Only 500 units of three versions of this timeless, unique, and highly collectible treasure were made.
