Additional Information

Francisco Tropa is a Portuguese artist with one of the most intriguing
bodies of work. His sculpture raises questions regarding the origins of
art by crossing it with the founding elements of Western culture such
as mimesis — for centuries, art in the West was created and conceived
as the reflection of nature. By resorting to ancient sculpture techniques
such as the founding of bronze which was already known to the
Sumerians and Egyptians, Tropa produces objects that, as is the case
with canas [canes], 2015, promote a premeditated confusion between
artificial and natural and seem to not belong to a specific time.
Tropa’s most recent exhibitions include ‘TSAE – Trésors submergés
de l’ancienne Egypt’, Musée regional d’art contemporain Languedoc-
Roussillon, Sérigan, France (2015); ‘Sim Não – Oui Non’, Moulins de
Paillard, Poncé-sur-le-Loir, France (all 2015); ‘TSAE – Tesouros submersos
do Antigo Egipto’, Pavilhão Branco – Museu da Cidade, Lisbon (2014);
and ‘TSAE – Trésors submergés de l’ancienne Egypt, La Verrière,
Fondation d’entreprise Hermès, Brussels (2013).
