This magnificent ensemble depicts dancing through the ages.
Central canvas depicting nine figures in a ball and the four smaller canvas depicting dancing couples of different epochs: Bélle-Époque, Empire, Louis XV and Louis XIV

Additional Information

Note: This ensemble was commissioned by the Conde de Valenças for the ballroom of his Lisbon palace. Originally the set was composed of seven panels and the ceiling canvas. The two other panels (one signed) are nowadays part of a private collection and the ceiling remains in situ at the Valenças Palace

The ensemble is described in detail at "Os Gatos" by Fialho de Almeida (20th January 1891).
Fialho de Almeida describes a private view at Columbano''s studio attended by half a dozen persons, including himself, in wich the artist reveals all the compositions for the Ballroom of the Valenças Palace
