As a painter and engraver Jean Baptist Pillement (1728-1808) became famous for his Chinoiseries. His engraved work was very important for the spread of this fashion. Published in 1755 his "New Book of Chinese Ornaments Onvented & Engraved", London, elucidates us how the author adapted the traditional French Rococo to the Chinese models of his taste. The drawings published include typical French forms still in the Bèrain manner. Despite all this Pillement models were also spread by several other engravers that in the mid-18th century published more than three hundred drawings with Pillement motifs. From the early 19th century Chinoiseries became fashionable in a wider range of interior decorations. Pillement works and works in his "style" were applied in frescos, canvas, silks, painted papers, printed fabrics and furniture, among others.
