Dirk Stoop, a painter and engraver of Dutch origin, came to Portugal at the invitation of D. João IV. In 1662 he accompanied Infanta D. Catarina to London for her wedding with King Charles II of England, documenting the event in seven etchings (one of which presents a view of Terreiro do Paço similar to that represented in the painting that is now up for auction ). Other works by the artist include one of the most important views of Terreiro do Paço in the 17th century, which is currently part of the collection of the Lisbon Museum
