Works by the master João Coelho Sampaio are famous and highly sought after, the quality of his work is well depicted in this example. Furthermore, the present case is even more important once the chinoiserie motif is extremely rare in Portuguese silver of the 18th century, specially in works of this size and quality.
Portuguese silver was naturally influenced by the English production of its time, being Paul de Lamerie's genial production the epitome of the Chinoiserie fashion.
