Estimate

Session 1

Description

Indo-Portuguese ivory sculpture
On the top a seated Baby Jesus, head resting on His right hand, dressed in a shepherd's tunic with a gourd and scrip
On the left shoulder sits a lamb while another rests on His lap under the Child's protective left hand
The figure rests on a mountain shaped stand of rocky characteristics, formed by three overlapping sections of complex iconography
On the upper section the Fountain of Life from which drink lambs and birds; the fountain, crowned by and angel, is sided by Saint Ann and Saint Joachim; on the laterals Saint John with the Eagle, on the left, and Saint Matthew with the angel on the right
The central section is defined by the figure of The Baby Jesus as The Good Shepherd, amongst lambs, holding a cross - in a premonition of it's own crucifixion - and sided by Saint Mark and the Lion on the right hand side and Saint Luke with the bull on the left
The lower section is centred by a reclining Mary Magdalene reading the sacred texts near the Holy Oils; on the left a cave with Saint Jerome, identified by It's attributes, and on the right possibly Saint John The Baptist quenching the lamb's thirst
Lower frieze depicting a lion or tiger pursuing deer
17th/18th century
(minor losses, defects and restoration)
