China, Qing Dynasty, 18th/19th century

Solid zitan wood, the inset base lacquered black

Of cylindrical form, raised on four bracket feet

Decorated in the Baibao qian (百寶嵌) technique with inlays of jade, mother-of-pearl, ivory and other hardstones, depicting a scholar and young attendant holding a branch of peaches in a landscape with pine tree and rockwork, amidst stylised clouds

The reverse incised and gilt with a poem composed by the Qianlong Emperor (r. 1735-1796), evoking the eleventh lunar month and scenes of female embroidery, from the Twelve Months (十二月令) tradition
