Additional Information
The salver now offered for sale is a remarkable example of the best baroque silver production of the North of Portugal where is clearly noticeable the influence of the foreign silversmiths (including several Italians) working in the region with more advanced techniques and distinct formal language.
The pair of this salver is kept at the treasure of the cathedral of Braga and is illustrated in VASCONCELLOS, Joaquim de; "A Arte Religiosa em Portugal", vol. I, 1914/15, Emilio Biel & Ca. Porto.
The Fundação Ricardo Espírito Santo collection as on display a totally relatable round salver (Inv. 71) with very close techniques wich bears Porto assay mark of the first quarter of the 18th century and Manuel Vieira de Carvalho maker's mark (cited 1693-1726), this salver represents Neptun at the centre and was bought by Ricardo Espirito Santo from the Rothschild collection.
It illustrates the cover of the silver catalogue of the FRESS museum - OREY, Leonor d'; "Ourivesaria, Fundação Ricardo do Espirito Santo Silva, Museu-Escola de Artes Decorativas Portuguesas", pps. 42, 43 and cover, 1998.
