Additional Information
Founded in Lancaster in the 1730s, the workshop of Gillows of Lancaster and London became a benchmark in British furniture of the 18th and early 19th centuries, renowned for the quality of materials, refined design, and solid construction. From 1769, the firm also established itself in London, supplying furniture to an extensive clientele of British nobility and high society.
Wine coolers of this form, with fluted columns and hinged lid with radial gadrooning, are a model frequently associated with the Gillows firm of Lancaster. The first design for this model with lead lining appears in the Estimate Sketch Book of 1787 (cf. L. Boynton, Gillow Furniture Designs 1760–1800, Royston, 1995, fig. 178).
