German silver gilt, first half of the 17th century
Relief decoration with impressive chisel detail depicting Orpheus Controlling Nature
At the centre Orpheus plays a lyre and is surrounded by several animals representing the different continents: elephant, bear, stork, bull, panther, two lamas, rabbit, frog, serpent, mole, goat, boar, sheep, horse, lion, deer, two birds and a monkey in a tree imitating Orpheus playing the lyre
Ground chiseled with a city depicted with primitive prespective, border with spiral frieze and volutes;
tab most probably of later date with floral motifs and masks
Assay trace at the back, apparently unmarked, most probably Bavarian (Augsburg)
