Additional Information
During classical antiquity it was believed that rock crystal was water frozen at such low temperatures that it would never defrost. It was considered a stone with magical properties and highly sought after used in the production of amulets and small luxury objects.
Rock crystal objects were already very expensive during the Roman period and amphoriskos like the one now offered for sale were certainly used to store perfumes and precious oils.
This shape with two handles and small foot is also known in cerami pieces of the 1st century B.C.
