Additional Information

Some authors attribute this armorial to the Marini, a wealthy Italian family with maritime trade connections.
According to David Howard and John Ayers identical armorial appears in the bookplate for Pietro Marini de Barnabita, an illustrious Marini family member who lived in the middle 18th century. These authors refer also that although Portuguese families armorials exist with similar individual characteristics, none is known with the full set of this plate's armorial details, therefore arguing that it is impossible to connect it to a Portuguese family.
Nuno de Castro on the contrary refers a column at the town of Atouguia da Baleia that has on its sides the Ataíde Arms and the depiction of a bull, arguing that a large set such as this could have served direct relatives of D. Luís Peregrino de Ataíde.
