Description

China, Qing Dynasty, Qianlong reign (r. 1735-1796), Chinese edition, last quarter of the 18th century

Depicting scenes from the campaigns against the Jinchuan, set in a fortified mountainous landscape with numerous figures in combat, stone watchtowers (diaolou) and defensive walls

One print with military encampments and stockades in the foreground, the imperial troops advancing upon fortified positions

The other with a more rugged mountainous terrain dotted with towers and defensive structures, showing episodes of assault and siege

The upper margin of each sheet bearing an extensive Chinese inscription corresponding to a poem by the Qianlong Emperor commenting on the military episodes depicted, followed by an impressed imperial seal

The original compositions executed by European missionary artists at the Beijing court, among them Giuseppe Castiglione, Jean-Denis Attiret, Ignaz Sichelbarth and Giovanni Damasceno Sallusti, the prints of this Chinese edition produced in Beijing by Chinese engravers trained by the Jesuits

In reddish-brown wood frames, with white paper mounts
