Description

English silver of the 18th century
Profuse rocaille decoration with volutes, flowers, corbeilles, scale friezes and flower shaped cover finial
Spout decorated with shell and floral motifs, volutes, acanthus leaves and two animal heads; S shaped handle with two child heads with laurel crowns
Engraved with Beresford coat-of-arms under two crowns (earl and maquis) flanked by two winged warrior figures and above "NIL NISI CRUCE" motto
Stand profusely decorated with shell and floral motifs, flowers and ribbons on three cabriole legs with animal heads and shell feet
Plain lamp bearing Beresford crest
London marks for 1767 and maker's mark most probably of George Methuen
(small wear signs, defect to the handle caning)

The chisel work of this kettle is remarkable and the similarities between this and the important kettle executed by the Portuguese master João Coelho de Sampaio (sold VERITAS December 2015 for 25.000 euros) are very curious, especially at the spout and handle design
