Description

Red and gilt lacquered wood
Shaped form with slightly domed lid, central lock, raised on four dragon-head feet
The exterior decorated in gilt on a reddish-brown ground, with successive figurative reserves of Chinese inspiration, depicting figures in palatial interiors, pavilions and gardens, framed by dense ornamentation of foliage, flowers, fruit and scrollwork
The lid repeats the same ornamental vocabulary, with two figurative scenes on the sides and an interlaced monogram at the centre
The interior, in red lacquer, is compartmented and retains a box with lid and two lids decorated in gilt with Chinese scenes, four small scalloped trays decorated with monogram (ICB or CIB), and another four with a quartered coat of arms, I Brito; II Sousa (do Prado); III Almeida or Melo; IV Henriques, with helm and Brito crest
Large set of engraved mother-of-pearl gaming counters, of circular and rectangular form, with engraved numbering on one face and, on the reverse, repeating the monogram on the box lid
