Description

Chinese porcelain
Of cylindrical form, narrower at the top, delicately painted in blue and white, depicting a continuous landscape with a scholar figure on a riverbank conversing with a boatman
Edge and base surrounded by borders with chrysanthemum scrolls.
Moulded with C-shaped handle, decorated with floral scrolls
Ming Dynasty, Chongzhen period, c. 1635-1644
(minor glaze flaws and hairline to handle)

Height: 20 cm

Note:
The form of this tankard originates from Dutch prototypes in stoneware or wood. Pieces of this type would have been produced exclusively for export and were generally decorated with figurative scenes (Harrison-Hall, 2001).
Two tankards of the same form in the British Museum collection and published in the book 'Ming Ceramics In The British Museum' (pp.358-359).
A tankard with very similar form and decoration sold at Christie's in 2015 - Sale 3721.
