Chinese export porcelain decorated in grisaille and gilt, with a circular central reserve depicting a galant scene with European figures: a young man about to cover a young lady's shoulders with a cloak, in an interior setting with architectural column and heavy drapery. The cavetto with gilt spearhead frieze and border decorated with continuous 'du Paquier' style ornament in grisaille and gilt. Qianlong period, c. 1745
Diam.: 23 cm
Additional Information
The galant scene depicted on these plates would have been inspired by 18th-century European engravings and was adapted by Chinese porcelain painters for the Western market. Hervouët & Bruneau (La Porcelaine des Compagnies des Indes à Décor Occidental) illustrate a similar plate, dated circa 1745, as well as other variants of the same scene on boxes and small service pieces. The present set is distinguished by the particular detail that the young lady is represented awake, whereas in the examples illustrated by Hervouët & Bruneau she always appears asleep.
