Description

Carved ivory

Rectangular double-sided form, with two rows of fine teeth, separated by a wide central band decorated in relief

The central band is framed by a moulding with friezes of scrolls, semicircular motifs, and stylised foliage elements, arranged symmetrically, in an ornamental vocabulary of medieval inspiration

One side depicts episodes from the Passion of Christ, including the Entry into Jerusalem, the Kiss of Judas, the Arrest of Christ, and the Crucifixion

On the other side, the medallions depict scenes from the life of the Virgin and the childhood of Jesus, including the Marriage of the Virgin and Saint Joseph, the Virgin nursing the Infant Jesus, and the Circumcision of Jesus

The corners feature rectangular plaques with incised decoration of Gothic architectural inspiration, with ogival arcades and a reticulated pattern
