Additional Information
Jacques François Joseph Saly (1717-1776) was one of the most remarkable sculptors of the eighteenth century, distinguished by his extraordinary technical mastery and the refinement of his compositions. His training at the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture in Paris provided him with the solid foundation that is reflected throughout his work.
His appointment as royal sculptor to the Danish court marked the pinnacle of his career, culminating in the creation of the imposing equestrian statue of Frederick V in Copenhagen, which stands as the greatest testament to his talent.
The bronze sculpture presented here, depicting Eros in repose, reveals significant affinities with the master's known works. The exceptional quality of execution is evident in the meticulous treatment of different textures - from the feathers to the rose petals and the softness of the skin. The figure's pose and the symbolic elements, such as the abandoned torch and bow, are characteristic of Saly's sophisticated approach.
The remarkable similarities with the marble "Le Faune au chevreau" at the Musée Cognacq-Jay in Paris suggest that this piece may be a previously unknown work by the master or, possibly, a creation by one of his closest followers. In either case, this sculpture represents a magnificent example of the artistic excellence of French Rococo.
