Description

Ming dynasty, Chongzhen period, ca. 1635-1644
Of tapering cylindrical form, painted with a continuous scene of a scholar on the riverbank conversing with a boatman. The rim and base are encircled by borders of chrysanthemum scrolls.
Modelled with a C-shaped handle decorated with floral scrolls.
(small glaze imperfections and a hairline on the handle)

Note:
The design of this tankard is rooted in Dutch prototypes made of stoneware or wood. These types of pieces were exclusively manufactured for export and typically featured figurative scenes (Harrison-Hall, 2001).
Two tankards with the same design can be found in the British Museum's collection, as documented in the book 'Ming Ceramics In The British Museum' (pp. 358-359).
A tankard with a very similar shape and decoration was auctioned at Christie's in 2015 - Auction 3721.
