This intricate coat-of-arms combines the two most powerful families of the Iberian Peninsula in the 18th and 19th centuries: the Bragança, Kings of Portugal from 1640 and the Bórbon, Kings of Spain from 1700.
At the transition of the 18th to the 19th century the two families successively married the young infantes and infantas creating dangerous lines of succession. The unification of Portugal and Spain and their important empires was a dream fed during centuries by both sides.
The House of Borbón-Bragança was founded with the birth of D. Pedro Carlos (1786-1812), Infante both of Portugal and Spain
The royal prince was a very delicate piece in the Iberian politics and lived most of his life at the Portuguese court both in Lisbon and Rio de Janeiro, married a Portuguese Infanta and his cousin, D. Maria Teresa (1793-1874).
Their son, D. Sebastião (1811-1875) (not accidentally with this prophetic name) was the potential heir to both crowns and used this coat-of-arms in the years between the foundation of the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and the Algarves in 1815 and its end in 1825 with Brazil's recognition of independence by Portugal.
Of his descendants one became particularly famous, his great-granddaughter Cristina de Bórbon Patiño, 4th Duchess of Dúrcal, wife of the multimillionaire Antenor Patiño.
