Additional Information

The tapestry now offered for sale is a masterpiece of the Brussels tapestry production in the Golden Age years. Brussels achieved almost a legendary position in the textile production by the late 15th century and the peak of quality and sophistication is commonly dated between 1510 and 1568.

Depicting the mythological story of Ceres this tapestry bears one of the most important provenances in Portugal, the Palmela collection. Started in the second half of the 17th century with D. Luís de Sousa (1637-1690) the Palmela collection reached worldwide reputation with D. Pedro de Sousa e Holstein, 1st Duke of Palmela. Extremely wealthy and powerful D. Pedro managed to assemble an impressive group of masterpieces in several areas such as silver, painting, sculpture, furniture and textiles, among many others.
