Of flattened form with archaistic handles, carved in relief and openwork with two dragons emerging from waves amidst lingzhi-shaped clouds, the reverse showing a carp's tail

中国,清代,十九世纪。黄玉带糖色小瓶,扁腹仿古双耳,浮雕及镂雕双龙出海,间饰灵芝祥云,背面饰鲤鱼摆尾,内膛掏挖规整。

The composition evokes the legend of the carp that, upon leaping the Dragon Gate (Longmen) waterfalls, transforms into a dragon, an allegory of success in the imperial examinations and social ascent, here depicted simultaneously in its initial and final states of transformation.
