Description

China, Qing Dynasty, Kangxi period (1662-1722)

Of foliate rim, moulded with a petal-lobed body

Painted in underglaze blue, the interior with a central medallion depicting a carp leaping above crested waves, below a band of waves and prunus blossoms at the rim

The exterior with three dragons chasing the flaming pearl, above a frieze of sixteen petal-shaped panels filled with floral sprays

The base bearing an apocryphal Da Ming Xuande nian zhi six-character mark in underglaze blue within a double circle

Note:

The iconography of the carp leaping above the waves alludes to the legend of the carp that, upon ascending the falls of the Dragon Gate (Longmen), transforms into a dragon, symbolising success in the imperial examinations and social advancement. The association with the dragons on the exterior reinforces this auspicious reading.
