Additional Information

The model of these candelabra is attributed to the design of Jean-Démosthène Dugourc (1749–1825), with a signed and dated project from 1790 in the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris. Their execution is also associated with the bronzier François Rémond (1747–1812, maître 1774), who supplied this model between 1783 and 1786 to the marchand-mercier Dominique Daguerre. A similar pair, from the Louis XVI period (c. 1785), is reproduced in H. Ottomeyer and P. Pröschel, Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich, 1986, p. 286. Another example is part of the Wallace Collection, London (cf. Peter Hughes, The Wallace Collection, Catalogue of Furniture III, London, 1996, p. 1246, F174–175), having been acquired by Le Brun at the sale of the Comte de Vaudreuil in November 1787. Various castings of this model exist, from the late 18th century and throughout the 19th century, with slight variations in the quality of the casting and decorative elements.
