A Louis XVI ormolu mantel clock by Cronier à Paris

Description

Gilt and chiseled bronze, with white enamel dial signed Cronier à Paris, with Roman numerals for the hours and Arabic numerals for the minutes. Two-barrel movement with silk suspension and striking mechanism for hours and half-hours, with count wheel on bell. Case surmounted by a figure of a winged cupid on clouds, holding an oval medallion with the relief profile of King Henry IV. Shaped base decorated with relief foliage friezes, on four feet. France, last quarter of the 18th century (pendulum lacking; mechanism not tested)

Additional Information

Antoine Crosnier, known as Cronier, son of a Parisian master cabinetmaker, obtained the title of master clockmaker on 1 March 1763, establishing his workshop on rue Saint-Honoré. He is considered one of the principal Parisian clockmakers of the second half of the 18th century, having collaborated with the most distinguished craftsmen of the period for the production of cases and bronzes for his creations, notably the cabinetmaker Jean-Pierre Latz, the bronze casters François Vion and the Osmond brothers, and the gilder Honoré Noël.
