Additional Information

Chinese porcelain decorated with topographical views enjoyed particular popularity in 18th-century Europe, depicting palaces, gardens and famous cities based on European engravings sent to China as models. These pieces, often commissioned by nobles and merchants, constitute rare testimonies to the circulation of images and admiration for European architecture.
Christiansborg Royal Palace, depicted on the present dish, was the residence of the kings of Denmark until 1794 and, since the mid-19th century, has housed the Danish Parliament. Hervouët & Bruneau (La Porcelaine des Compagnies des Indes à Décor Occidental, p. 247) illustrate a snuff box decorated with the same view, signed and dated 1763, and also reference a similar dish in the David collection in Copenhagen.
